Abstract

This study examined the welfare and health-related service experience and health behavior of park users to provide essential data for ongoing on-site service program development. The participants in this study were 122 male senior citizens over age 60. They were conveniently sampled for this study and the data were collected using one to one interviews with structured questionnaires.
The age range of the participants was 60 to 90 and their mean age was 74. Respondents¡¯ health behavior stage based on the TTM(transtheoretical model) were: 23.0%, 4.9%, 4.1%, 10.7%, 55.6% for non-smoking: 28.7%, 7.4%, 3.3%, 2.5%, 58.2% for non-drinking; 35.2%, 3.3%, 12.3%, 4.1%, 45.1% for exercise; 43.4%, 0%, 9.8%, 9.0%, 37.7% for good diet.
Among the study participants, 32% had some sort of welfare services and their satisfaction with these welfare services was average 3.33 (5 point scale). The health-related services provided for them were BP check, hand acupuncture, medicine, health education, etc. and their satisfaction with these services was 1.54. The services hoped for in the future included BP and DM check, education on dementia and disease prevention, exercise, medicine, recreation, provision of chess boards without charge, hand acupuncture, maintenance of a clean environment, and dental and eye check ups.
Even though welfare and health related services were being provided except for meal service, these were not being given regularly and continuously. In addition, the degree of satisfaction was low. On top of this th elders requested more varied services. Therefor to provide better quality service for elders, continuous on-site service program development focusing on the needs and stage of health behavior status of elders should be provided.
